Getting the most out of College

Teachers are required to:

• Ensure that each student is issued with a subject Assessment Plan by Week 4 of each course outlining formative and summative assessments appropriate to the subject and year level
• Ensure that all summative assessments are provided in writing to students with due date, task requirements, word length, weighting and assessment criteria clearly indicated
• Negotiate with students if homework cannot be completed by the due date (due to ill health, family/personal problems, other extraordinary commitments and/or extenuating circumstances)
• Explain to students the consequences of not completing homework on time and if appropriate impose and supervise catch-up sessions/detentions for students who do not comply
• Contact a parent/guardian by telephone or in writing when a student repeatedly fails to complete homework and each time a summative assessment task is not completed by the due date.

Students are required to:

• Allocate appropriate time to undertake personal study and complete all homework as set course.
• Independently and regularly revise work covered in class.
• Negotiate prior to the due date with each teacher if tasks cannot be completed by the due date.

Students should also:

• Learn to plan their work taking into account family, sporting, cultural and/or employment commitments and social activities as well as the commitment required for assessment timelines.
• Recognise that some subjects have more homework demands than others but that one subject should not receive so much time that others are neglected.
• Discuss any problems they have with homework or study plans with an appropriate person (e.g. parents, Mentors, subject teachers, Career Advisers, Managers, an Assistant Principal and / or the Principal)

Parents are asked to support the College by:

• Facilitating a student’s sound study habits.
• Providing notice to a subject teacher (by telephone, email or note) of any reason's for a student’s homework not being completed by the due date.
  

College Routine

Arrival and Departure Times
The College is open from 8:00am to 4:21pm each day with the Library available for extended hours in the evenings Tuesday to Thursday. Start and finish times for students vary according to individual timetables with students having classes from 8:25am to 2.55pm. Students are expected to attend all timetabled classes for enrolled courses including Mentoring lessons and assemblies.

Classes
All students are expected to attend classes punctually, to be prepared for each class by bringing the necessary equipment and by having completed the required homework. Students may be expected to work on their own or to engage in group activities but each student must submit his/her own work for summative assessment. Please refer to the Centralian Senior College Assessment Policy for more information on summative assessment requirements.

Assembly
Assemblies are held on a regular basis throughout each term in the Theatrette. It is either a whole College or combined year level meeting where information is shared between staff and students, presentations are made, special achievements are celebrated and special activities held.

Mentoring
All Centralian Senior College students are individually mentored as they undertake the timetabled coaching program course, comprising personal development and pastoral care. The Mentor offers guidance to students concerning wellbeing, appropriate behaviour, attitude and dress, oversees attendance and maintains communications between students and the College. The Mentor is the primary communication link between the College and parents/carers. Each Mentor coordinates the official assessment reports for each student and generally supports each student in his/her care in achieving their goals. Meetings between Mentors and students occur on a regular basis as timetabled.

Personal Study Habits

Rationale
Centralian Senior College students are offered a quality teaching and learning environment that supports academic development and success. Personal study and homework are integral parts of a quality learning process so that students may:

• understand and/or practice the work taught in class
  
• learn to work independently
• develop skills in planning, organising and time management
• catch up' on work missed through absence from class
• complete assignments on time.



Policy Statement
All students are required to do personal study and homework as set by the subject teacher in every subject. Homework may consist of:

• specific formative tasks set during class for completion after class
• revision of work done in class to reinforce concepts
• revision of topics as study for tests and/or examinations
• summative assignments.
  

Dress Code

After community consultation last year, the College Council agreed to adopt a minimum dress standard. The new College Polo Shirts are now widely worn across the college and two shirts were made available to each student for purchase via the "back-to-school voucher" program. While this is not a compulsory item of clothing, it is the minimum standard of dress required. The expectation is that students dress in a manner that would be appropriate in a work place. Students wearing singlets or "spaghetti straps", cropped tops, or t-shirts with inappropriate graphics or slogans may be asked to either change into a College shirt or return home to change.

Occupational Health and Safety requirements dictate the need for certain items of clothing to be worn for particular activities. For example closed-in shoes must be worn in Science laboratories, kitchens, workshops and for Physical Education practical classes.
